DefectDojo Pro Now Speaks 27 Languages

DefectDojo Pro 3.3.300, released September 28, gives the Pro UI a choice of 27 languages. The setting belongs to each user, not the instance. Two people signed in to the same DefectDojo can work in two different languages, and neither choice affects the other.

Only the interface changes. Your finding data and the values your automation reads through the API stay exactly as they were, so a team working across several languages is still triaging the same findings.

Choosing your language

In DefectDojo Pro, the control is the globe icon in the sidebar, between your account button and the alerts bell. Pick a language and the interface switches right away, with no page reload.

The choice is saved to your account, not your browser. Sign in from another machine and DefectDojo is already in the language you picked.

Community Edition has the same per-user setting. It's the Language field on your profile page, saved along with the rest of the form.

Which languages are available

The 27 languages include German, Japanese, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Hebrew, Arabic, Persian, and Urdu. English is always there, and it's the language a new account starts in unless an administrator has set a different default.

A language only appears in the menu once its translation is complete: every message in the interface translated and checked. You won't land on a page that's half English and half something else.

What gets translated, and what stays as written

Translation changes what you read on screen. It doesn't touch your data or anything your automation depends on.

Translated

Everything DefectDojo writes itself: menus, buttons, headings, form labels, help text, confirmation dialogs, table column headers, and the messages it shows you. Notifications are translated too, into the recipient's language rather than the language of whoever triggered them. If a colleague working in German does something that notifies you, the email arrives in the language you chose.

Left as written

  • Your data. Finding titles, asset and organization names, descriptions, tags, and notes stay exactly as you or your tools entered them. A finding imported from a scanner reads the same in every language.
  • Values the API uses. A finding's severity is Critical in every language. The label on screen changes, but the value stored, exported, or sent to an integration doesn't. Scripts written against the API keep working, and a report exported in one language carries the same values as that report exported in another.
  • Commands, setting names, and identifiers. A management command, an environment variable, and a CVE ID are the same everywhere.
  • Text from connected tools. Whatever Jira, a scanner, or another integration supplies passes through as it arrives.

For administrators

DD_LANGUAGE_CODE sets the instance default, which is en-us out of the box. It applies to anyone who hasn't picked a language, and to anything that runs without a signed-in user, such as a scheduled notification.

A user's language is stored on their profile, so you can set it for someone from the user administration page, next to their other contact details.

Notifications addressed to a person go out in that person's language. Destinations that aren't a person use the instance default. A Slack or Microsoft Teams channel, a webhook, and the instance-wide notification email address are read by many people with different preferences, so one language has to be chosen for them.

How the translations are made

Every language other than English is machine translated, then reviewed for completeness rather than style. The result is accurate enough to work in, and it gets corrected over time.

If a phrase reads badly in your language, tell your DefectDojo contact. The fix is applied across the whole interface, not just the screen where you spotted it.

The docs come in eight languages

The DefectDojo documentation at docs.defectdojo.com is available in English, German, Spanish, French, Japanese, Portuguese (Brazil), Simplified Chinese, and Italian. Switch from the language menu on any docs page.

Get started

DefectDojo Pro 3.3.300 is out now. Open the globe icon in the sidebar to pick your language, then read the Language and Localization page in the DefectDojo docs for the full breakdown of what is and isn't translated. Community Edition users can set theirs from their profile page.
